I think about this topic almost everyday as I watch and listen to the interactions that happen in my classroom. The culture that has developed because of the routines and the emphasis on thinking and learning is beyond anything I could have ever "created" through community building routines. The shift towards expecting students to show their thinking and learning through inquiry has helped them develop a deeper respect for not only their own learning, but others as well. It's hard to explain how this has happened, but I know it is. I can't wait to see it develop more next year!

I just got done reading the VT book and I am so excited to begin some of the routines I learned about. I am currently on my maternity leave, and coming back at the end of the this month. I can tell that my classroom will change because my mindset of teaching has changed. I plan on using the Tug-of War routine in social studies while comparing the topic of present day vs. long, long, ago. I really cannot wait to use the Headlines routine. I could see doing this routine across subject areas. I could also see making class goals each month and displaying them all year long outside the classroom. It would be a great way for students to refer to throughout the year and also a great way for parents to see what we are doing in class.
