Circle of Viewpoints
Circle of Viewpoints is a routine for digging deeper into ideas This routine will require students to capture the heart of the learning and then consider different points of view. It is important to frame the issue that the students are asked to look at from different points of view so that there are possibilities for diverse opinions and ideas. The gallery below has samples of thinking that spans a variety of subject areas and grade levels.

The 4 C's Routine
The 4 C's Routine captures connections, challenges, concepts and changes within an area of learning. It is described in Making Thinking Visible as a tool for looking deeply at non-fiction text. However, teachers have found that this routine stretches thinking in many curriculum areas. One discovery is that 4C's adds structure to learning. For instance, before or after a field trip. It also leads to more thoughtful answers when responding to Puzzled Penguin. Below are some photos of how it has been used at a variety of grade levels:
Sentence-Phrase-Word
Sentence-Phrase-Word can be used for a variety of purposes that are explained in the Keynote presentation available for download below. Looking at sample questions from the M-Step test protocol that our students will take in the spring, it will be important for them to be able to hone in on the meaning conveyed by each sentence of a piece of text. The Sentence-Phrase-Word routine will help students develop this skill. Keep in mind, however, that it is also a routine that is a powerful catalyst for classroom discussion. If you have the Making Thinking Visible book, this routine is one of the ones highlighted on the DVD.
